Baltimore Ravens

In 1996, the Baltimore Ravens were a very late addition to the National Football League.  This came from a bid to bring football back to Baltimore after the controversial relocation of the Colts from Baltimore to Indianapolis and the equally controversial failed relocation of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. The Ravens were named via fan contest as an allusion to Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven.” Baltimore was the home for Edgar Allen Poe for some time, is the location of his burial, and home to his earliest surviving house which is now preserved as a museum. The Ravens tend to have a strong defense and broke defensive records in the 2000 season by holding opposing teams to 165 total points when they won the Super Bowl the first time. The team also won the Super Bowl in 2012 in a tight game that is nicknamed the Blackout Bowl  due to a power outage in the Superdome that required play to be suspended for 34 minutes.
