The Cleveland Browns were founded in 1946, and named after Paul Brown, their first head coach. Even though he didn't like that name for the team it still won out in a contest over the Panthers, an earlier failed football team (not the current Carolina Panthers). It turned out that a different business man owned the rights to that name at that time. The team was admitted into the National Football League in 1950. Once it joined the NFL, the team started breaking average attendance records early and often. In fact, it averaged home crowds of over fifty thousand during its inaugural season.

During the years from 1996 to 1998, the team became inactive, but, in 1999, the Browns returned to the NFL. Currently, the city of Cleveland remains as the only NFL never host the Super Bowl or send a team there. Yet, the organization has been making lots of positive changes off the field, and with Jake Delhomme and Peyton Hillis creating such a powerful combination on the field, Browns fans are in for some promising days ahead.
